                                                                                                                Mortal Kombat: Reptile

From a hidden boss to a fan favorite … The Mortal Kombat character Reptile has changed much through the years.  He appeared in the very first Mortal Kombat game as a secret fight that you could unlock by completing a series of certain fatalities.  He would later appear in the next installment, Mortal Kombat 2, as a playable character.  While in the first game he was only reptilian in name, he now had a series of special moves like “Acid Spit” and “Slime Ball”.  For his iconic fatality he would remove his human mask, reveal his true reptilian form and eat the head of his stunned opponent.  In following games he would ditch his ninja disguise entirely in favor of a more monstrous design, complete with spikes down his back and a long tail.

The Marvel Comics Sentinels have changed much since their inception.  Originally introduced in the pages of X-Men #14 (1965), Sentinels were towering, mutant-hunting robots created by supervillain Bolivar Trask to eradicate “the mutant threat”.  Over the years, their designs and capabilities have evolved.  From their early iterations as massive, purple-colored machines to more sleek and humanoid models.

In the Disney+ “X-Men ’97,” the Sentinels play a significant role, reaffirming their relevance in the ever-expanding Marvel Universe.  Their presence not only honors the rich history of the X-Men franchise, but also provides an opportunity for fresh storytelling and modern interpretations of these iconic villains.  Throughout the years, Sentinels have symbolized various themes, including prejudice, and the dangers of unchecked technological advancement – all more relevant now than ever before.
